I personally think there should be an animal abuse registry filled with the names of people who abuse animals. Animal abusers don’t abuse just one animal, they abuse every animal they come in contact with. There needs to be a registry with their names and pictures so that pet stores, breeders and people selling pets in ads know not to sell them an animal.
There, of course, has to be stricter penalties for people who abuse animals. There was an image of a dog with its muzzle taped shut so it wouldn’t bark making the rounds on Facebook. Who does that? Dogs bark. That’s what they do. If you don’t like how much a dog barks then don’t get one. The person who did that didn’t get any punishment at all. They did get their face plastered all over Facebook but that doesn’t stop them from abusing another animal. In fact, when people get away with abuse they tend to become more abusive because instead of taking responsibility for their actions, they blame the victim for getting them in trouble.
There are people who abuse animals and think it’s funny. These types of people should not be allowed to be near animals at all. There are those who make comments like who cares, it’s just a dog. They believe that animals don’t matter but every living creature on this planet matters. How we treat animals says a lot about what is in our souls. Anyone who can laugh when an animal is in pain is heartless. They lack empathy and compassion.
You can tell a lot about a society by the way they treat the people and things they consider not equal to them. There are people who treat other people and animals cruelly and there are those who know they are doing it and do nothing about it. I don’t know which is worse, the people who perform the cruel act or the people who let them get away with performing the cruel act. The person who acts cruelly does so because they are sick. The people who let them get away with it are supposed to know better so what is their excuse? We have learned to put people’s feelings above animal lives. We don’t want to upset them, make them angry, make them feel bad so we don’t do anything about their behavior. We convince ourselves that, except for that one act, they’re good people inside. Meanwhile, their cruelty continues.
It’s time to stop what they’re doing. First, by calling them out when they mistreat animals. Second, by calling the authorities if they continue. Third, by having an animal abuse registry so they can’t get to any other animals again. Fourth, by locking them up if they abuse an animal again. Animal abuse should not be tolerated by anyone. Animals have a right to be safe in the same way that humans do.
